Under jockey Tanner Thedford, Karolina got her head in front at the wire while completing the 350 yards in a quick :16.680 seconds, a 104 speed index. The winner's purse of $66,000 more than doubled her career earnings to $101,381.
Conditioned by Carl Draper, the brown filly that broke her maiden is now 1-3-1 in seven starts. Last season she was a finalist in the rich $384,031 Zia Futurity(G1) at Ruidoso Downs, but lost her path and finished fifth in the final. Karolina did not start again until March 10th when she posted a game second place effort in a Sunland Park maiden race. The homebred daughter of Grade 3 winner DESIRIO is out of Snazzy Ride, by Bridlewood.
It was the second stakes win at Sunland Park in a week for a DESIRIO filly. Last Saturday the son of Strawfly Special sired PJ Chick In Black, winner of the $251,358 New Mexico Spring QH Futurity(RG2). That brown filly was owned in partnership by Fredda Draper and Denny Bowen and also conditioned by Carl Draper.
Multiple Grade 1 winner Call Me A Blazn Chic picked up $23,650 to push her earnings mark over $403,500. J and M Racing and Farm own the filly. Roberto Sanchez trains with Esgar Ramirez riding. Mike Abraham bred her.
Wish You Had One To finished a half-length back, earning $11,000 for owner Royal Dream Ranch, LLC. Alejandro Perez Sanchez conditioned the filly bred by Terrence Lane. Jess Lavario was up.
