Photo by Don ShugartAMARILLO, TX—FEBRUARY 10, 2009—FEATURE MR JESS sired three AQHA Racing Champions of 2008, who earned five championship honors, on Tuesday during a webcast hosted by AQHA's Matt Darby. Darby revealed the winners of the 12 horse categories, four horsemen categories, three divisional champions and the world champion. Heartswideopen the 2007 Champion Two-Year-Old defended her title by being named 2008's Campion Three-Year-Old and Champion Three-Year-Old Filly. She won the grade 1 Ruidoso and Rainbow Derbies and was second in the All American Derby(G1). The brown daughter of FEATURE MR JESS won five of six starts in 2008 while earning $602,593 for owners La Feliz Montana Ranch LLC. Trained by Carl Draper she was ridden by Bonifacio Perez, Oscar Hernandez and Larry Payne. Bred by Kirk Goodfellow, Heartswideopen is out of the Champion and multiple-champion producer Dashing Phoebe, by Dash For Cash. Double Bar S Ranch, LLC's Jess You And I returned to championship status in 2008 being named the overall Champion Aged Horse and Champion Aged Gelding. The son of FEATURE MR JESS who was the 2006 Champion Two-Year-Old Gelding is trained by Jaime Gomez. Jess You And I was 3-1-0 from five starts while earning $441,490. Among wins were a new track record performance in the Champion of Champions(G1) and the Go Man Go Handicap(G1). Alejandro Luna and G.R. Carter, Jr. rode him in 2008. The brown gelding was bred by Rhonda Rae and Dawn List out of the Tolltac mare Gold Daze. Champion Two-Year-Old Filly honors went to Brenda Beautiful, a daughter of FEATURE MR JESS, won three of five starts while earning $273,952. The filly, which did not start until after Labor Day, is owned and bred by R.D. Hubbard and John T.L. Jones, Jr., Interests LTD. She is out of 2008 Broodmare of the Year My Dashing Lady by Dash For Cash. Trained by Paul Jones and ridden by Kenny Muntz, Ramon Sanchez and Esgar Ramirez, Brenda Beautiful's biggest victory was the grade 1 Southwest Juvenile Championship at Zia Park. KETEL WON also returned in 2008 to defend his title of Champion Aged Stallion. The son of Stoli who races for owner/breeder R.D. Hubbard won two of five starts while earning $226,960. Trained by Paul Jones, his biggest victory was the Zia Park Championship(G1). Out of Sixy Lady by Streakin Six, he was ridden by Ramon Sanchez and Cody Jensen. KETEL WON began his stud career at JEH Stallion Station-New Mexico this month. R.D. Hubbard picked up another Champion award when his aforementioned mare My Dashing Lady won Broodmare of the Year honors. The daughter of Dash For Cash produced grade 1 winners and champions of 2008 Noconi and Brenda Beautiful. The champions also will be recognized in March at AQHA’s Annual Convention in San Antonio, Texas. |
